The Thought Stealers

This week, the monster stat block for the Thought Stealers from last week’s adventure, The Splendid Spa of Two Angels

“Hey, do you see that odd haze over there?”


“Well, you can’t see it lying on a lounge chair. Sit up and put down your cocktail. Over there, by the spring.”

“Huh, oh yeah. Probably just a heat mirage. Relax. Order some oysters or something.”

“No, look! It’s coming closer. It’s…it’s…doesn’t it look like a person? No, it is a person…..It looks like…like you? Get up, get up! What’s wrong with you, why aren’t you moving?!”

Thought Stealers leak into our universe from an uncharted plane. No one knows what they appear like in their own dimension, but here they appear as a haze, at least initially. In order to continue to exist, they must steal a person’s thoughts. Imaginative thoughts, such as fear, are the easiest to steal. With each thought they consume they become more solid, until finally they suck all thought from their victim and assume their identity. Yet, a Thought Stealer can never create thoughts of its own, they merely mimic the actions and thoughts of their victims. Hordes of Thought Stealers have taken over towns before, reliving the same year over and over.

Dungeon World Stats:

Instinct: To consume thoughts, to steal identities

Group, incorporeal, planar

10 HP, 0 armor

d6 damage when in solid form


Special Qualities: Can drain mental stats when within reach. Only hurt when in solid form or by magic/blessed weapons or spells.

Special Moves

  • Steal thoughts, especially imaginative ones
  • Turn solid after consuming enough thoughts
  • Turn into someone whose thoughts it has stolen

Pathfinder Stats

Thought Stealers are an augmented version of Shadows, but cannot fly and do damage to wisdom, constitution and intelligence (DM’s choice) instead of strength. Their stealth is the same no matter the lighting condition. Additionally, they possess the special qualities of Dopplegangers

Init +2, Senses: darkvision 60 ft, Perception +8


AC 15, touch, flat-footed 12 (+2 deflection, +2 Dex, +1 dodge)

Hp 19

Fort +3, Ref +3, Will +4

Defense abilities: incorporeal, channel resistance +2, Immune (undead traits)


Speed: 30 feet

Melee: +4, 1d6 Intelligence/Wisdom/Constitution damage (DM’s choice)

Special attack: When solid, can also do 1d6 physical damage


Str – (use Str of victim when solid), Dex 14, Con – (use Con of victim when solid), Int 6, Wis 12, Cha 15

Base Atk +2, CMB +4, CMD 17

Feats: Dodge, Skill focus (Perception)

Skills: Perceiption +8, Stealth +8

Special Qualities: Change shape (alter self), mimicry, perfect copy. (See Doppleganger stats)
